Dr. Ackerman studied creative writing and psychology at Houghton College and earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from George Fox University. She lives with her wife in Portland, Oregon, and owns a private practice in rural Oregon.

Dr. Ackerman uses her writing experience and clinical expertise to plumb the depth of emotion in creative nonfiction and memoir. She has written fiction and nonfiction for two decades. Her fiction has been published in Mirror Dance and r.kv.r.y, where her story “Flame” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She has written on mental health subjects for Meet Monarch. She has edited several literary magazines, including The Lanthorn, Fine Line, and Evolve. She is a member of the Author’s Guild.
